Advocate Mural Dedication
Advocate mural by artist Antonio Burton, aka Toni Picasso, dedicated as part of African American Heritage Trail
A new mural was dedicated as part of the Macon County African American Heritage Trail on August 28. The mural is entitled Advocate and is by artist Antonio Burton. The mural is located on the Webster Cantrell Youth Advocacy building at the corner of Eldorado and Water streets. The mural is meant to encourage and inspire people to advocate for each other.
The word Advocate is not just a word, it's a promise, according to Holly Newbon, director of marketing and giving for WCYA. "It's a child who feels safe for the first time; it's a teenager who discovers their worth; it's a parent who finds strength and hope when life feels overwhelming." More than 1,200 youth are served each month through foster care, counseling, parenting programs, family support services and advocacy. "The impact we make is not only measured in numbers, it is measured in changed lives, families strengthened and futures made bright."
The mural was partially grant funded by the Illinois Arts Council.
