Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois Scholarship Fund Award First Two Scholarships

$1,000 scholarships were awarded to Rebecca Sharp and Emily McKinney, both pursuing degrees in oncology/hematology.

Rebecca Sharp

Rebecca Sharp and Emily McKinney are the first two recipients of the recently established Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois (CCSI) Scholarship Fund held at the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation (HICF).

Rebecca Sharp has worked as a nurse in Central Illinois for 20 years. Currently, Rebecca works as a nurse at the Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois Effingham location, and is enrolled in the Eastern Illinois University RN to BSN program. Upon completion of her degree in December '25, she plans to pursue a masters program to become a Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Educator.

"I have always enjoyed caring for my patients, but the oncology patients introduced me to a whole new side of nursing," said Rebecca. "These patients are so grateful for their care, and their fight to survive is incredible."

Emily McKinney

Emily McKinney is a recent graduate of Decatur Christian High School, where she graduated at the top of her class. This Fall, Emily is attending Millikin University to pursue a Pre-Med track, with future plans to enroll in medical school at Vanderbilt or SIU. Emily's ultimate plan is to become a Pediatric Hematologist.

"My medical challenges have given me a passion for medicine." said Emily. "I love learning about the amazing human body, and most importantly, helping people."

The CCSI scholarship supports oncology/hematology continuing education and professional development opportunities for healthcare professionals, including but not limited to nurse, radiation therapists, laboratory technicians, and pharmacists, who provide oncology/hematology-related services in Central and Southern Illinois.
