Community Foundation Annual Higher Education Scholarships Total $105,000+

Nearly 100 students receive scholarship awards for 2020-21 academic year

May 27, 2021 — Ninety-six students seeking higher education degrees, including 47 Macon County high school graduating seniors and 49 continuing or nontraditional college students, are receiving a total of more than $105,000 in scholarships through the competitive scholarship program coordinated by The Community Foundation of Macon County. This year’s individual awards range from $500 to $4,000.

“These scholarship awards are made possible through funds established at The Community Foundation of Macon County by generous donors committed to improving educational outcomes in our communities,” says Scholarship Coordinator Kathy Carter. “This program assists students as they pursue their educational goals.”

To be eligible, the students must have been accepted at an accredited college or university. Current college students were also eligible. More than 40 volunteers served as reviewers to select the scholarship recipients.

“Receiving this scholarship has lifted much weight off my shoulders,” says Kaitlin Jedlicka, a graduating senior at Decatur’s St. Teresa High School who plans to major in biology/pre-med at St. Louis University. “Providing the funds required to send a student to college is an unattainable task for many families in this day and age. I was in need of extra funds to contribute toward my college tuition for the fall of 2021. The individuals who established this scholarship are more than gracious, and I am so thankful for their generosity.”

“This scholarship will make a difference,” says Jonathan Oliger, a 2021 graduate of Mt. Zion High School who plans to major in chemical engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. “I was really excited and extremely grateful to receive the Golden K. Kiwanis Scholarship.”
